about The Promise Box

With her heart – and her loyalty – on the line, can she let true love in her life?

Every year, young Amish men descend on the cozy little town of West Kootenai, Montana, arriving in the spring to live there for six months and receive ‘resident’ status for the hunting season in the fall. They arrive as bachelors, but go home with brides! Lydia Wyse, a book editor from Seattle who grew up Amish, returns to the small community of West Kootenai, Montana to give comfort to her father after her mother’s death.

She is drawn back to the familiar Amish ways after finding her mother’s most precious possession, a Promise Box of prayers and scripture. What her publisher sees, though, is an opportunity for a sensational ‘tell-all’ book about the Amish. Lydia soon finds herself falling in love with Amish bachelor Gideon Hooley. She wants nothing more than to forget her past and look forward to a future as an Amish bride. Will the pain of her childhood—and her potential betrayal of her community—keep her from committing her whole heart?

Reader review . . .

Lydia left her Amish home as a teenager when she learned the truth concerning her birth.  But when she received news of her mother’s death, she returned home to West Kootenai, Montana to help her father.  The small town is a temporary home each year to “Amish bachelors” who descend on the town for six months in order to qualify for resident status during hunting season.  One of the bachelors is Gideon, a young man who also has a painful secret in his past.  When Lydia finds herself drawn back to the faith of her youth, Gideon is not the only one who questions her motives.  Lydia comes to wonder if Gideon and the community will ever accept and trust her.

In the second book of the “Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors” series, Tricia Goyer has written a story of healing, forgiveness, and second chances.  The setting for the story is a refreshing change from the majority of the Amish novels on the market.  The small town in Montana sounds like a wonderful place to live, and the people of the community would make great neighbors.

One character, however, seemed to disappear halfway through the book with no explanation.  Eve seems as though she is going to be a major character and an obstacle to the relationship between Lydia and Gideon, and then, poof! where’s Eve?  In a book with a subplot containing missing persons, her disappearance from the story is ironic.

I definitely want to find the first book in the series to see how this story began, and I’ll be waiting to see the next novel.
