Reader review . . .

It’s 1971, and the world outside the Amish community is in chaos.  The war in Vietnam rages on, protesters are marching in the streets, and hippies are everywhere.  But everything in Betsie’s world is not perfect, either.  Her parents have left the Amish for their new faith, and she has agreed to board with an Englisch family to learn their business for her cousin.  Soon, Betsie must choose between her childhood sweetheart and her safe way of life, and the Englisch family who needs her help.

Stephanie Reed has brought a new perspective to Amish fiction.  The 1970s setting was a fresh approach, with the Amish protagonist encountering the outside world for the first time.  Watching as Betsie is confused by Michael, the first hippie she has ever seen, and his vocabulary offers more entertainment and humor than usually found in this genre.  While the emphasis on Kent State and Vietnam seemed a bit heavy-handed at times, this was still a great start to a new series.
